In the late 1800’s Louis Sherry was an important name in New York City, starting as a restaurateur turned confectioner and eventually hotelier. Does the Sherry-Netherland Hotel ring a bell?

But Sherry’s chocolates, with names like Jamaican Rum (aged 7-year-old Jamaican Rum blended with a milk chocolate ganache), Sicilian Orange and Strawberry Romanoff (made with “frais de bois” strawberries and orange liqueur with a hint of vanilla) made his name iconic. If the delicious-sounding names aren’t enough to get you excited about our new treats, just look at the packaging! Louis Sherry is not only known for his candy, he was also marketing genius. By using these unforgettable rainbow colored tins to hold these chocolate delights, Sherry created a brand unlike any other in the Gilded Age in Manhattan.

This year, Louis Sherry has introduced the designer series for their 12 piece tins. Among those featured in the series is designer Harrison Howard who has been recognized for his screen prints, watercolors, easel paintings and panels. Focusing on the whimsical Asian stylings of chinoiserie, Howard has been commissioned by Caspari, a renowned name in the world of printed paper products. Caspari and Howard’s exquisite designs have proven to be a favorite of our Collage Home friends.

There is something simply wonderful about seeing a letter or invitation in your mailbox. Your heart may even skip a beat. “Who’s having a party?” “Who’s getting married?” “Someone took the time to write ME a card?” Physical invitations and letters are tactile and include detail — the weight and feel of the paper or card stock, the ink process, whether it’s been letterpressed, engraved, or embossed — that is often missed in an email or evite. It’s a personal statement and it sets the tone of the party and/or the character of the sender.

In an age of digital media and instant gratification, the custom stationery and greeting card industry is thriving. While the relatively new email invite, or evite, phenomenon serves its purpose (no stamps are necessary, no addressing or running to the post office to mail is needed, and they are instantly received among other benefits), personalized, hard copy printed invitations and stationery sent through snail mail continue to grow in popularity. Despite what you may expect in the modern age, “ready communication” has not been able to edge out the appeal of a hand printed invitation, and a whole new generation has begun to discover the beauty of the greeting card.

Perhaps it’s that the paper used for stationery is heavier and of higher quality than the paper we tend to see in our day to day lives, the beauty of a letterpressed design, or just the personal nature of a hand-written note that lends it a special quality that can’t be captured by any other medium.

As you may have heard, The Paperie was opened within Collage Home last October. At The Paperie, you can find that special greeting card for that special person, beautiful cocktail napkins, boxed stationery and notes, fun and whimsical note pads as well as personalized paper products. We offer custom orders of personalized stationery, note pads, address stamps, cocktail napkins, hand towels, gift enclosures, and even personalized koozies, cups and bridge sets! (These usually take about two weeks to receive, so plan ahead for that special personalized gift for that person who is hard to buy for.)

We also offer in-house printing for invitations of all kinds. This is one of our favorite services because we get to help make a client’s event memorable. Remember, our lines are expanding and new blank stock is arriving all the time. Many in house orders can be turned around within a week!

It’s exciting to see a younger generation embracing custom paper goods and continuing the tradition of the hand-written note or personalized invitation. It’s no surprise given that the heavy stocks and the embellishments are so beautiful — hand letterpress and gold foiling surely makes a birthday card a mini piece of art. Frame it and the card is a gift in itself!

Holiday Decorating Tips from Collage Home

Now that our calendars officially read December (how did that happen so quickly?) we are in full holiday mode in our showroom. We receive a lot of questions about the best way to make a home feel cozy for the holidays, so today we’re sharing our top holiday decorating tips:

1. Less is not more when it comes to lights on a Christmas tree. If you think 400 lights are enough for a large tree, add another 100 or 200. And always remember to start wrapping the middle of tree trunk. It’s labor intensive, but worth it.

2. Add lights to your garland swags trailing up the staircase railings or on the fireplace mantle.

3. Group together multiple candlesticks of different heights to make a statement as a centerpiece on a table or along a fireplace mantle.

4. Place solid silver and solid gold ornaments in the center of the tree so that the lights reflect off of the ornaments and light up your space.

5. Ornaments don’t have to always be on the tree! Fill a big bowl with solid color ornaments that complement your décor.

6. White lights have had a good run…. Don’t be afraid of colored lights.

7. Candle rings are making a big come back. Small berry or holly wreaths for the base of your candle sticks can make a simple candlestick quite festive.

8. Establish your color palette early. You may choose to incorporate hues from your home décor, or choose complementary colors that pop. Either way, picking your color theme before you start to decorate can save you lots of headache down the road when you realize that none of your decorations look quite right together.

9. When crafting your holiday centerpieces, look up. The chandelier is often overlooked where decorations are concerned, but it offers a unique place to hang shimmering ornaments or garland without taking up valuable table real estate.

10. Incorporate keepsakes that are unique to your family: portraits from past holidays, children’s art projects, and antique keepsakes from relatives often make the most special decorations of all.

11. Don’t stress! Consider enlisting the help of a professional to help you make the best use of your space. What works in one home might not be the best choice in the next. The less time you spend worrying about making your décor perfect means more time spent with your family… and after all, that’s what the holidays are all about.

Now Open: The Paperie at Collage Home

It’s been quite eventful around here over the last couple of weeks! Collage Home has had a bit of a makeover: fresh paint and new wall coverings, rearranging the entire showroom, and adding new inventory has kept us very busy.

If you are an Observation Deck follower, you know that Monday, October 17th marked the debut of our new addition within the store, The Paperie at Collage Home.

The Paperie is stocked with fabulous new card lines from Papaya!, The Social Type, Farewell Paperie, Katie Leamon, Karen Adams Designs and Haute Papier just to name a few. Of course I couldn’t set up shop without the addition of one of my favorite vendors, Caspari. Their cocktail napkins and guest towels and bridge accessories are just smashing.

We had a nice group in attendance for our ribbon cutting ceremony, among them Debbie Goetz, Editor and Owner of the College Park Community Paper; Andrea Kudlacz, Executive Director of Collage Park Partnership; and locally and nationally known Artists, Fritz Stinebaugh and Victor Bokas, both of whom we are lucky enough to showcase here at Collage Home.

This week, so many old and new friends as well as former customers of The Paper Gallery have stopped in to see what they have been missing for the last few months.

We were ever so thankful and surprised by the dearest of dear friends who brought the loveliest bouquet of orange sunflowers and a matching bottle of orange labeled champagne! Oh My! Cheers!

Introducing The Paperie at Collage Home

Starting on October 17, The Paperie at Collage Home brings the boutique stationery experience back to College Park.

We are excited to announce a new venture: The Paperie at Collage Home!

The opening of The Paper Gallery in 1987 brought unique paper products to College Park. But its closing earlier this year left a void in the personalized paper goods market on Edgewater Drive… one that Collage Home owners Jack Hanson and Grant Gribble recognized and were happy to fill! With their help, we are bringing eclectic and unique paper goods back to the 32804.

We have big plans for The Paperie, a boutique area within Collage Home.

While you’re sure to see some familiar lines, we look forward to taking The Paperie in a totally new direction by featuring fresh products and new gifts complementary to Collage Home. And, most importantly, we will be looking to see what, you, our customers want to see in stock.

Collage Home remains the College Park destination for hand-curated home décor and eclectic furnishings, and The Paperie adds a new dimension to the experience. Custom stationery, greeting cards, notes, personalized gifts, fabulous cocktail napkins and guest towels—and even invitations—await!

Many of our items are carefully chosen by our owners from buying markets, and offering a thoughtfully curated collection of hand-selected items is an important part of the Collage Home experience.

Here at Collage, we also carry many of the same items as high end department stores like Neiman Marcus and Barney’s New York, plus other fine home décor stores you can find online such as Horchow or Mecox (referenced in many home design magazines) and Lexington Gardens, a lovely home store in Manhattan. But we also do everything we can to offer these items at the best possible prices for our College Park shoppers!

Road Trip to the Atlanta Gift Market

Note to self: when driving straight to Atlanta from Orlando, make sure you have plenty of snacks and conversation… Thankfully, we never have problems on those fronts!

At 5:30 am on July 15, Collage Home owners Jack Hanson and Grant Gribble set out with myself in tow for the Atlanta International Home & Gift Market. I was designated back seat sous chef during the ride, assembling ham and cheese croissants with the least mess possible and dishing out the Classic Lays chips.

We dished on the weather, the traffic, the economic climate, the Presidential race (Oh dear!) and of course our plans for new treasures coming to Collage Home. At Collage, we pride ourselves on offering items that you won’t find at every other store on the block. There is no place better to find those special items than at a market packed with unique showrooms and collections… needless to say, the weekend was a success!

We had a great time together in Atlanta, and the new treasures are just starting to come in. We’re so excited for you to see everything we hand-picked just for the store!

Having owners so invested in the buying process is evident in our showroom—everything is picked with love!

Collage Home is very lucky to have a talented mix of buyers and merchandisers, each with their own tastes and aesthetics, that complement each other so well. 16 Things I Learned This Summer of ‘16

Life is fragile. Period.
Any temperature higher than 93 degrees might as well be 120 degrees.
Products that smell nice will always sell.
When biking in aforementioned 120 degree heat, make sure you eat and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
Really great faux orchids are worth the investment.
If you don’t pay attention to #4 you will collapse on the side of the road with heat stroke.
Blue and White is “in” for the long haul.
Recovering from heat stroke can take up to 3 days.
The right throw pillows can “make” a bed or a room.
Time is the new “money”. Sometimes is smarter to just call the professionals and “pay it done.”
It is entirely possible to sleep 30 hours without getting up to go to the bathroom or kitchen at all.
You can own a Bar Cart and not even drink.
My Orlando is a city, a town, a village of unity and strength… and we can dance.
Love is Love is Love is Love is Love is Love … yes, of course it is.
There will never be enough fundraisers, memorials, tribute songs or videos to fill up the hole in Orlando’s heart.
But it doesn’t hurt for a song to try to mend some of the pain.

“HANDS” a Song for Orlando was just published on July 12. It’s a brilliant new tribute song and lyric video for Orlando and it’s available now exclusively on iTunes.

Proceeds from the sale of the new tribute single in the United States will benefit Equality Florida Pulse Victims Fund, the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida, and GLAAD.

“Hands,” is a musical tribute to the 49 victims of the shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida. The track features Mary J Blige, Jason Derulo, Britney Spears, Tyler Glenn, Selena Gomez, Halsey, Ty Herndon, Imagine Dragons, Juanes, Adam Lambert, Mary Lambert, Jennifer Lopez, the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles, Kacey Musgraves, MNEK, Alex Newell, P!nk, Prince Royce, Nate Ruess, RuPaul, Troye Sivan, Jussie Smollett, Gwen Stefani, and Meghan Trainor.

Patience Carter, Tiara Parker, and Angel Anthony Santiago, survivors of the shooting at Pulse Nightclub, appear in the lyric video. I hope that you’ll give this new song a listen and ask yourself what you’ve learned this summer.
